Writing Workshops Dallas is an independent writing school for hardworking, talented writers who want to strengthen their voice, develop a greater understanding of craft, and forge a path to publication along the way. Our mission is to bring your writing out of the wilderness and into community. We offer multi-level writing courses, seminars, and individual consultations to fiction writers, nonfiction writers, poets, and screenwriters. No matter the stage of your career, there is a place for you at Writing Workshops Dallas. Our classes are inclusive and intentionally small, offered on a rolling basis throughout the year.
At Writing Workshops Dallas we take your writing seriously. We place the highest importance on teaching the craft of writing so that students can produce meaningful and memorable work that has the opportunity to find a readership beyond the workshop. Student work is discussed primarily from a craft perspective with emphasis on character, structure, language, plot, and many other things. Essential to our mission, we want writers to be part of a literary community that goes beyond the workshop table. Writing Workshops Dallas was created on the basis that having a literary community is essential to the life of any creative writer.
Named one of D Magazine's Artists to Learn From in 2018, Blake Kimzey founded Writing Workshops Dallas to fill a need for creative writers in the Metroplex who want a creative community outside of the university system as well as for those writers planning to apply for and pursue an MFA. After he graduated from Texas A&M in 2003, Blake wrote in the dark without the benefit of a creative writing community until 2007, when he enrolled in introductory creative writing night classes at Brookhaven and Richland Community Colleges in Dallas. He took these classes in the evenings after his day job three semesters in a row and found his first mentor and a trusted group of readers. When he and his wife moved to Iowa City in 2008, he was able to take these meaningful writing friendships with him, sending work back and forth via e-mail. After Blake enrolled in the MFA program at UC-Irvine in 2011, he found the community that would support and shape his writing career for the rest of his life. Almost 10 years after he attended his first community college class and moved back to Dallas, Blake realized the need for an independent writing school within the thriving literary arts scene in Dallas, and thus Writing Workshops Dallas was born.
For many writers, finding a community is an essential step that leads them to take their work and craft more seriously.
