We offer standard services for manuscript critique, MFA application consultation, and one-on-one coaching.

There is a saying that writing is rejection. That's true: everyone has been rejected many times. But over time those form rejections should turn into personal rejections and eventually become acceptances. Do you feel stuck in your journey to publication? If so, let us help! If you're submitting your work for publication you know that only the top 1 - 2% of all submissions are accepted by literary journals and literary agents. Those are long odds, and we want to help you improve them.

Writing Workshops Dallas Instructors have had their books published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Simon &  Schuster, Gallery, FaithWords/Hachette, The University of Arkansas Press, A Strange Object, Black Lawrence Press, and have won the Foreword Review’s Editor’s Choice Prize for Fiction, Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in debut fiction and the Black River Chapbook Competition.

Our Instructors have also had their work widely published by great magazines: Tin House, McSweeney's, New York MagazineThe Chicago Tribune, ZYZZYVA, Electric Literature, Vice, Short Fiction, BOMB, Salon, O, the Oprah Magazine, The Sun, The Southern Review, New England Review, American Short Fiction, Gettysburg Review, Redivider, Green Mountains Review, Pleiades, Black Warrior Review, Black Clock, The Los Angeles Review, The Best Small Fictions, and The Masters Review, to name just a few. To get your book-length manuscript, short fiction, poems, and creative non-fiction to the next level it helps to receive professional editing. With so many writers vying for publication you need to make sure your work has received the attention it needs before you spend hours researching markets, writing cover letters, and staring at your e-mail hoping to receive an acceptance from an editor or offer of representation from an agent.

Let us help you refine and revise your work before you send it out or query literary agents. We'll  stay true to YOUR vision for what the work is and should be. We'll attend to your voice and style and get granular, providing sentence-level editing as well as big-picture notes that you need for a final polish. We offer different levels of editing depending on the needs of your manuscript and your budget. For a quote on manuscript services for your work (of any length or genre, including novels, memoirs, poetry/short fiction collections, children's books, or stand alone pieces), simply introduce yourself and your work to us by clicking on the button below and we'll get to work!

Are you applying for an MFA in Creative Writing? If this is your first time applying or if you're back in the MFA application trenches, our advice at Writing Workshops Dallas is that you ONLY apply to FULLY FUNDED programs.

The hard reality is that you don't want to go into debt to get an MFA. You don't. It is hard enough to make it financially as a writer that you don't want the added hardship of MFA debt hanging over your head. The good news: many MFA programs are fully-funded and will give you the time you need to focus on your work while also being part of a thriving literary community that shares your values. These MFA programs will send you back into the world as a better writer in relationship with your readers for life with little to zero debt.

The bad news: these programs are the hardest to get into and ALL of your peers are also applying to them. So the competition is stiff. So how do you stand out? The only way to get accepted into one of these highly competitive programs is to WOW with your writing and demonstrate the thing that makes your work your work. If you don't already know what that is we can figure it out together.

Our goal at Writing Workshops Dallas is to help you work on and revise your creative sample (fiction, poetry, non-fiction) so that it stands out from all the rest. Our instructors have attended top MFA programs such as Iowa, Michener Center for Writers at UT Austin, UC-Irvine, ASU, Cal Arts, Sarah Lawrence, and understand what it takes to get accepted. We'll be here to hold you to a high standard, to point out the things you do well, but more importantly: identify the soft spots in your work that need dramatic attention before you submit your MFA application to your dream school(s). We'll always stay true to YOUR vision for what the work is and should be. We'll attend to your voice and style and get granular, providing sentence-level editing as well as big-picture notes that you need for a final polish.

For a creative portfolio of work (writing sample up to 25 pages) and the statement of purpose (and/or personal essay), we charge $450. We'll offer two rounds of critique on your creative portfolio, write a robust critique letter in each round and schedule one-hour phone consultations to answer any questions you might have. If you're ready, we're ready! To introduce yourself to us and to formally register for MFA Application Prep, click on the button below and we'll get to work!
