Whether you’ve had a middle grade fantasy percolating in the back of your mind for years, or you just finished a draft of a young adult rom-com, this workshop will help you take the next steps towards publication. Led by Michelle Schusterman, author of over a dozen critically acclaimed novels for kids and teens, this course is designed for aspiring kidlit writers at any stage in the process. We’ll cover the difference between MG and YA novels (it’s not just about age!), finding a plotting or outlining method that works for you, creating a voice that jumps off the page, and uncovering the heart of your story.
Each week, we’ll explore concepts from The Magic Words: Writing Great Books for Children and Young Adults by Cheryl B. Klein, excerpts from two highly acclaimed children’s novels, and additional assigned reading supplied by the instructor. Students will have two opportunities to workshop pages of their drafts, as well as one opportunity to workshop a query letter or pitch, in a supportive and constructively critical environment. A private conference with the instructor via Skype is available prior to the start of the course.
NOTE: Students are required to purchase The Magic Words: Writing Great Books for Children and Young Adults by Cheryl B. Klein as the foundational text for this course, as well as Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar (for middle grade writers) OR The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan (for young adult writers), which will be used to illustrate concepts explored every week.

Instructor Michelle Schusterman is the author of over a dozen novels for kids and teens, including both series and standalones in several genres. Her most recent novel, a dark fairy tale-inspired middle grade entitled SPELL & SPINDLE, is a Junior Library Guild selection and was hailed as "an excellent melding of horror and heart" in a starred review from Kirkus. She co-authored the young adult novel THE PROS OF CONS, a YALSA 2019 Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers nominee, praised as "an entertaining and sometimes slapstick testament to the power of friendship" in a starred review from Publisher's Weekly.
“I so enjoyed Michelle Schusterman's MG/YA novel writing class. It really helped get me started on my novella and her critiques were amazingly spot on with what I am trying to accomplish with my story. I highly recommend any classes she conducts. There was so much great information and she was always available to help.”
